The “Open Concept” Flow: Mastering Long Spans Without Transitions
The “Open Concept” layout is the hallmark of modern GTA home design. Homeowners in Markham want their flooring to flow seamlessly from the front door through the living room and into the kitchen without those clunky, raised “T-molds” (transition strips) in every doorway. While traditional laminate had strict limits on how far it could be installed before needing a break, new technology has changed the rules.
The 1,000 Sq. Ft. Challenge
In the past, most laminate floors required a transition strip every 30 feet to allow for the floor to “float” and move as one unit. In a large open-concept main floor, this meant a distracting strip of plastic or wood right in the middle of your beautiful space. To achieve a 1,000+ sq. ft. continuous span, you need two things: a stable subfloor and a superior Locking System.
Why the “Click” Matters
The strength of the joint is what allows a floor to stay together over a long distance. Advanced locking systems, such as Uniclic or 5G fold-down tech, provide a much tighter, more secure connection. These systems distribute the tension of expansion and contraction more evenly across the entire surface area. This allows many of our premium laminate collections to be installed in areas up to 60 or even 80 linear feet without the need for a single transition strip.
Perimeter Expansion: The Hidden Secret
To ditch the T-molds, you must be meticulous about your perimeter expansion gaps. Because the entire 1,000 sq. ft. floor will move as one giant “raft,” you need to leave a slightly larger gap (typically 1/2 inch) under your baseboards and door casings. This gives the floor the room it needs to breathe without pushing against the walls and causing the joints to “peak” in the center of your room.
